Online poker began its rise to popularity in the early 2000’s and is currently a multi-million dollar industry. Before the days of online poker, poker was played strictly at casinos and live poker rooms. However the costs associated with playing live poker are much greater than those of playing poker online. Space, tables, chips, cards and dealers all need to be paid for, while in online poker these costs are very minimal. Adding another poker table would be a big expense to a casino, but to an online poker room the cost would be insignificant while the profits would be great.
The biggest and most basic difference between online poker and casino poker is that you do not know your opponents when playing online poker. You are not physically sitting at the same table as them and observing their every move, as if you were in a live poker room. Many well-known poker tells, such as watching the players for their eye and body movement, become impossible if playing online. That does not mean that there are no tells in online poker, where players can observe their opponents game pace and watch for any irregularities. Shuffling and dealing are all computerized in online poker, so the game mechanics take much less time than if they were dealt by a person.
With its easy access for the players and profitability, it is not a surprise that online poker has taken up such popularity within the past several years.
