Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts & Co (KKR) was founded by Henry Kravis and his business partner George Roberts in the mid-seventies with support from the First Chicago Corporation. But only a year ago they have launched a unique proposal that centers not simply on how much money they can net, but additionally on how ecologically aware each of the enterprises in their portfolio currently are.
Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts & Co’s Henry Kravis and the independent Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) joined forces last year, intending to make environmentally aware business practice an accepted concept. They intended to help resolve all important matters damaging the environment, for instance hazardous chemical use, hazardous waste, exaggerated consumption of water resources, and global warming. To implement this, they use eco-efficiency which involves techniques like reducing the waste of resources, using clean energy, and waste reduction. Simple and effective, but the management did not even understand the totality of the program’s benefits until the man responsible for the Green Portfolio Project, Ken Mehlman, evaluated the project when it had been functioning for its first full year. Knocking off all expectations, Ken saw that eco-efficiency not only decreased ecological impact, but was also increasing the profitability of all their business organizations too. Virtually all of the business organizations owned by Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts & Co and Ken Mehlman now actively take part in the Green Portfolio Project. Seeing that the group has a value of virtually $100 billion USD, you can see what a challenge this actually was. The original program has evolved far beyond its basic remit and now includes new opportunities. For example, Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts & Co joined the Environmental Defense Fund’s Climate Corps Program an enterprise that teaches interns taking a Master’s in Business Administration how to promote financially strong, green principles. KKR and Ken Mehlman have been formulating metrics and analytical tools which will be able to evaluate and manage various resources. This type of info is significant as any sort of business may easily measure all of their day to day processes and identify precisely how they can improve while at the same time permitting staff to find out their environmental impact.
Today’s business community has been changed forever by the efforts of Henry Kravis, the KKC, and the Environmental Defense Fund. Their developments have set a benchmark for firms in every sector and illustrated that making profits need not entail the hefty price of damaging the environment.
